Waste Collection in the Rural City of Wangaratta

As part of Council's Waste Management Strategy, Council implemented changes to kerbside waste collection in September 2015. This included urban households receiving a new kerbside organics bin and rural households receiving a larger garbage bin. Garbage collection has also moved to a fortnightly schedule.

Urban households within the Rural City of Wangaratta are provided with a “three bin” kerbside collection service, comprising of a weekly organics collection and fortnightly garbage and recycling collection. Organic waste is processed at a specialised composting facility. The introduction of this service in September 2015 enabled council to reduce the amount of waste entering Bowser landfill by more than 40%. This has enabled Council to achieve a healthier environment and importantly extend the life of our landfill, which will ultimately reduce household costs associated with waste disposal in the future.

Rural households within the Rural City of Wangaratta are provided with a larger 240 litre garbage bin which is collected fortnightly. Rural households do not receive the green organics bin because Council understands rural households are already undertaking great initiatives to divert their organic material. The urban waste collection area has been defined to exclude "Farming Zones" and "Rural Living Zones". Households located on the outside of the urban waste collection boundary (or the opposite side of the road) may request to opt in to the organics collection service upon approval from Council.
